Palm Pre takes on the iPhone in new ad

Sometime back in past, I remember, Blackberry released an ad attacking on Apple iPhone. The ad went like this ‘a black-berry(fruit) dashes into an eaten apple and the apple falls.’ Apple replied to that ad ‘a black-berry(fruit again) dashes into Apple and it burts’. I couldn’t make a connect to the ads and now its too blur in my mind to know it.

So now this time around when i am blogging about this so that the memory doesn’t go blurr again, its Palm Pre trying to hit on iPhone. The Sprint guys who are very smart in calculations calculated its the time first generation iPhone contracts are coming to an end. So now they want users to change their contracts and shift to sprint Palm Pre.

Sony Eyes Cellphone/Game Gear Hybrid

Sony Corp is considering developing a cellphone-game gear hybrid in a bid to better compete with Apple Inc's highly popular iPod and iPhone, the Nikkei business daily said on Saturday.

The Japanese electronics and entertainment conglomerate launched its first Walkman three decades ago, dominating the portable music player market, but it has been running far behind the iPod and iPhone in recent years. Sony plans to set up a project team as early as July to develop a new product that combines functions of its portable game player and Sony Ericsson's mobile phones, the Nikkei said. Sony Ericsson is a cellphone joint venture between Sony and Sweden's Ericsson.

A growing number of game-makers including Capcom Co Ltd and Square Enix Holdings are now offering software for the iPod and iPhone to take advantage of the Apple products' popularity, posing a threat to Sony's PlayStation Portable and Nintendo Co Ltd's DS. A Sony spokesman declined to comment on the report.

Import of Chinese Cell Phones Without Identity Code Banned

Import of Chinese mobile phones without unique identity code numbers has been banned, India's commerce ministry announced.

"Import of mobile handsets without International Mobile Equipment Identify (IMEI) number or with all-zero IMEI is prohibited with immediate effect," the Director General of Foreign Trade said in a notification.

IMEI - a unique 15-digit number - helps authorities trace the handset that has been used to make a call.

The Department of Telecom (DoT) had earlier directed telephone operators to disconnect services to subscribers who own handsets that do not have the IMEI code as such phones posed a security threat.

However, since then, the Cellular Operators Association of India has developed a software for embedding genuine identity code - issued by the global association of telecom operators - on handsets without the requisite IMEI numbers.

Nokia E90 Communicator

Great build quality
Sturdy
Fully functional front display
Large and clear internal display
No TV out
2.5mm earphone socket
Sound quality from provided earphones is bad
No business card reader
Camera quality is not too great

Enter, the Big Daddy of all phones! The E90 may look like and perhaps feel like any other communicator, but is it really? The answer is a resounding NO! The previous models, although still quite popular in many arenas has nothing on this baby. With a combination of elegance, style and a sturdy demeanor, the new addition to the business i.e. "E" class of Nokia phones has promised to overshadow its predecessors. But whether or not it can actually live up to that is what we’re here to find out. So let's get to it.

Form Factor
Although the design is quite like any Communicators of yore, this one has a few upgrades. For example this is the first to have a fully functional ‘External Phone’ with a 16million color display and a resolution of 240x320 pixels. The reason I refer to it as an ‘External Phone’ is simply because it pretty much looks like any other Nokia phone inside some sort of shell. Whatever a normal S60 phone can do, the outer phone can do as well. No exceptions this time. This may also be the first time Nokia has placed the power switch on the side of the screen rather than on top.

The rear houses the 3.2 megapixel, Auto-Focus camera with a flash and the speakers. At the very bottom you'll notice a little flap, which is where the microSD card can be inserted. All you have to do is slide it open and insert the card. The bottom is where you’ll find the mini USB (2.0), charger pin and a 2.5mm earphone socket. What’s most noticeable are the two steel hinges. This is another factor that sets the E90 apart from the previous models. The steel hinges make the phone a lot sturdier and add a certain rugged appeal to it. On the side are 2 keys. The one on the top is a dedicated voice recorder key, and the one at the bottom just below the infrared sensor, is the shutter release key for the camera. However, it's not a dedicated key to activate it which is quite odd.

Flip it open and this is where all the magic happens. The large internal screen is what this phone is all about with a crystal clear resolution of 800x352 pixels and 16 million colors. On the sides of this fabulous screen are 2 pairs of keys. On the right just underneath the secondary camera is a set of call take and end keys and on the other side of the screen is a set of soft keys. But I don’t like the positioning too much as they’re a bit too far from the nav-pad, so you end up having to adjust your hold every now and again when selecting options.

The Full QWERTY keypad makes the E90 look like a miniaturized laptop. At the very top of the keypad Nokia has graciously provided us with direct shortcut keys to various functions and one key to call your own (Open key). There’s also a separate key to switch on the keypad light when it's dark and on the other side of the keypad is a five way Nave-Pad. So that’s it for the design of this big boy. Let's see what he’s capable of doing.

Samsung Launches Solar Powered Handset in India

Samsung India has just announced the global launch of their first solar-powered mobile phone, the “Solar Guru” (Guru E1107) in the Indian market. The new handset enables its users to charge the battery anywhere via sunlight.

Dr. Farooq Abdullah, Minister for New and Renewable Energy and J. S. Shin, President and CEO, Samsung South West Asia HQ launched the phone at a ceremony organized by the company at its manufacturing complex at Noida. “The Solar Guru has been developed keeping in mind the needs of Indian consumers, especially customers residing in areas where the electric supply is unstable, so that the consumers can rely on solar charging to remain connected.” states and J. S. Shin, President & CEO, Samsung South West Asia Headquarters. The Solar Guru represents the Company’s efforts to strengthen its leadership in the solar panel mobile market.

With an extended solar-powered battery, the Samsung Solar Guru solves the problem of unavailable or unstable electric supply, particularly in far flung areas. The phone has the capacity to provide around 5-10 minutes of talk time with one hour of solar charging (Measured when the phone is turned-off under the sun light of 80,000 Lux. Results can be different depending on circumstances). Moreover, the solar panel charging allows its users to save money and energy consumption on traditional electrical charging.

“With Samsung’s cutting edge technology and consumer-oriented strategy, I believe the Solar Guru is the perfect fit for the Indian consumer – not only because it is solar powered, but because it has a host of customized features , especially developed keeping in mind the needs of Indian consumers” said Sunil Dutt, Country Head , Samsung Mobile Division.

The Samsung Solar Guru comes in a compact design with features such as an FM radio, MP3 ring tones, embedded games and a powerful torch light. For consumer safety, the phone offers Mobile Tracker, which automatically alerts when the SIM card is changed or sends out an SOS message in an emergency. The Solar Guru provides “Mobile prayer”, a specialized feature for different religions that includes religious prayers and wall papers.

The Samsung Solar Guru (Samsung Guru 1107) is priced at Rs. 2799. Following its introduction in India, the Solar Guru will be launched in various markets including Europe, Southeast Asia, Southwest Asia, and Latin America in June 2009.

N97 Now Compatible For N-Gage

Like I said before, the N97 is a good handset but lacked a few things here and there to be, what I consider ‘complete’. One of the things was it was not loaded with the company’s N-Gage gaming platform app. Although a few games like Spore and Guitar Rock Tour were present, they don’t fall under the N-Gage umbrella.

With the very latest Symbian OS and S60 UI on board it should have been part and parcel of the package but it was apparently not ready I guess. However, the handset is now listed on the N-Gage site as a compatible device for the system. However, other Touchscreen S60 handsets like the new 5530 and 5800 XpressMusic handsets don’t seem to feature anywhere just yet.

iPhone OS 3.0 Review online

Cut/Copy Paste works great
Landscape QWERTY Keypad
Spotlight Search is handy
Mobile tracking and Remote Wipe
OS got a little bit sluggish
Features present in most cheaper handsets
Bluetooth file transfer is absent
Update for iPod Touch is paid service

Sure we’re all anticipating the arrival of the new iPhone 3G S but in the mean time existing users will have to suffice with Apple’s latest iPhone update i.e. version 3.0. We’ve already told you time and time again about what the update will entail with regards to feature upgrades etc., so I have no intention of boring you with the details of once again. However, in case you haven’t yet upgraded your handset and are contemplating the same, here’s a quick review of my experience with the new upgrade.

New Looks , Apps. And Speed

First off, there’s really no visible difference in the UI except for the fact that you’ll notice the Voice Memo application icon, The SMS texting icon is also no devoid of the name and simply has a little voice bubble. All else is the same. One of the biggest issues I have with the handset after upgrade the OS to 3.0 was that it began operating a little slower than usual. It took over a second or so, with a jerky response to change screens, or even just to come back to the main menu desktop after exiting a function. Changing of the screens orientation was also not as smooth as before and that was quite disturbing.

Type Anyway YOU want

A couple of things that I believe are the strongest points of the upgrade that really bring out the best with the handset are the landscape keyboard and Copy + Paste functionality. The keyboard can be used in both forms now making messaging or even taking notes so much easier in landscape. It did take usually long for the orientation to switch form portrait to landscape and although that pissed me off, I still think that the keyboard is so much more functional in this view.
The iPhone having MMS is too little too late.
Copying isn't always cheating

The second feature that will be a boon to any iPhone user is the Cut/Copy+Paste functionality. Simply tap the screen where there’s writing in a message or note and there options will pop up – Select All which will select all the text on the screen, Select which gives you the control to slide across the screen and choose what you wish to highlight for copying and then of course Cut and Copy. To Paste the information anywhere, just press and hold down on the area you need to copy to and you’ll get a Paste option pop up. Brilliant! Absolutely Brilliant! You can even copy information off of websites, like email addresses phone numbers etc. The procedure is exactly the same. It’s also a lot easier as you can double tap to zoom into a page for easier viewing.

MMS - Too Little Too Late?

MMS has all but faded away into the recesses of social networking (SN) where it’s so much easier to just take a picture and uploaded onto a blog of SN site into your profile for everyone to see. So the iPhone having MMS is, in my opinion, too little too late. With free downloadable apps of sites like Twitter and Facebook that allow you to directly upload images, it makes more sense to do that than pay for MMS. Of course the sliver lining is that you can share pictures on a more one on one basis with contacts, then again you could also use email for the same. But MMS will come in handy when you need to send out a video, except existing users with an iPhone first Gen or 3G don’t have a video recorder.

Nokia N82 Quadband 3G GPS Cell Phone Video Review

This phone is a multi-media powerhouse. It comes with not one but TWO camera’s. One in the back that is a 5 megapixel featuring Carl Zeiss optics, auto focus and integrated Xenon flash. One in the front for self portraits and video calls.

The Nokia N82 comes with Bluetooth, supports Java and is Wi-Fi enabled. Heck it even has GPS on it too just in case you are bushwacking somewhere remote and find yourself lost. And when you’re in the city, no problem - download city maps from over 100 countries!

A Nokia N82 review would not be complete without mentioning that the one thing that actually surprised me is that Nokia actually included the Audio/Video TV cable in the box. That’s right, you can shoot your videos, snap your photos, add some sound tracks to them and plug this bad boy into your television set to show your firends all of your media on a large format screen. Suh-weet!

Also it’s worth mentioning that you can drop a 2GB microSD memory card into the phone to store all of your multi-media files.

The phone has a 2.4″ LCD display that supports up to 16 million colours and a wide viewing angle too. For Audio out the N82 has an integrated stereo speaker and 3D sound effects.

Touchscreen Phone Options

Touchscreen phones are everywhere these days. The simple interface of a touchscreen makes sorting photos, navigating web pages, selecting cell phone options and even into a series of easy gestures instead of fumbling around a standard keypad. Because of their popularity, there are an ever-increasing variety of them, and it can be hard for customers to know what they should be looking for in a phone. Here are some things to consider when buying a touchscreen phone:

·Interface

There are nearly as many different types of interfaces as there are touchscreen cell phones. Most employ a resistive interface with tactile feedback, meaning there will be some physical sensation to let you know an action has been recognized. The iPhone, G-1 and BlackBerry Storm use a more sensitive, but also more fragile, capacitive interface, which requires less pressure but does not work with a stylus.

·Screen size and Display Resolution

Screen sizes range from 2.5 to 3.5 inches wide. However small your hands may be, the tip of your finger is still larger than the point of a stylus, so obviously the bigger the screen you have to work with, the better. The same is true of the number of pixels—a high pixel count will have the sharpest image. Most touchscreen phone resolutions range from 400×240 to 480×360 pixels.

·Battery life

Touchscreen technology is a drain on batteries. Generally, the cell phones that utilize a touchscreen feature will have a larger battery capacity. You definitely want the largest possible battery and/or one that is quick to recharge.

Nokia N97, N86 8GB, E52 all get N-Gage compatibility

Quick, what's easier to find: an E52 or a game that'll run on it? You'd think this is an egregious case of putting the cart before the horse, but you've got to give the N-Gage team credit for being well-prepared -- they're already listing Nokia's new mega-thin business candybar as being compatible with the service. Also on board is the just-released (and still hard to find in many parts of the world) N86 8MP and -- perhaps most notably -- the N97, making the beastly handset Nokia's first S60 5th Edition phone with N-Gage support. How's the experience sans keys? Let us know your thoughts in comments.

Palm Pre vs iPhone

The Pre is Palm’s answer to the iPhone, and is considered to be the most direct challenge to Apple’s dominance over the touch-screen smartphone market.

Some of the biggest differences between the Palm Pre and the iPhone have to do with background applications and cut and paste functions. The iPhone will not allow users to have applications running unchecked in the background, as its creators say it too negatively impacts battery life. Not only will the Palm Pre run “multiple activities”, as they call them, but will also allow users to view and combine multiple calendars from Outlook, Exchange, Google and Facebook intelligently, deleting cross-calendar schedule conflicts. While the iPhone recently developed cut and paste and MMS messaging functionality for its forthcoming OS 3.0, those programs must be implemented, while the Pre will come equipped with these functionalities.

Perhaps the biggest advantage Apple has in this smartphone battle is the vast number of applications that already exist for the iPhone. The Palm WebOS is a new platform, and will have to play a lot of catch-up before it will have as many applications available as the iPhone. Gaming will be another concern, as Palm has already confirmed that the initial gaming on its WebOS platform will be “very basic”.

Buyers will have a difficult time choosing between the purchase of a new smartphone, or updating their existing iPhone with its OS 3.0, available soon after the release of the Pre.

BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8220 Smartphone

One thing many people are concerned with when it comes to smartphone is the exposure of the keypad. Many such phones have no protection for the keypad, and if users do not lock it, they end up placing calls unintentionally, or wasting battery power navigating menus without realizing it. The BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8220 offers a solution by combining smartphone technology in a flip phone design.

The Pearl Flip 8220 has a great external display that helps you screen calls and messages. Additionally, it has a 2 megapixel camera, with a flash included, so you can take great pictures and either send them via picture messaging or upload them to your favorite social networking sites. The camera also has a camcorder function, so you can capture video and sound when you are on the move.

Another unique feature of the Pearl Flip 8220 is the SureType® keypad. The slender rows of keys are designed to offer users the ability to type messages quickly, and with great accuracy, on this compact phone. It also learns to recognize the way you type and word patterns to make messaging quicker and more intuitive.

The Pearl Flip 8220 also comes equipped with an excellent media player for all your music, pictures and video, with excellent resolution and clear sound. It also comes with BlackBerry® Maps, and allows users to view street maps and get step-by-step instructions on how to get where you need to be. With its cool flip design and range of features, the BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8220 is truly a smartphone of distinction.

LG Dare Mobile Phone

Touchscreen technology is huge with mobile phones today, and the LG Dare offers users one of the smallest mobile touchscreen phones on the market today. Another feature that sets this phone apart from many others is its drag-and-drop capability, which allows users to customize their menu using their touchscreen to include frequently used applications. You can also get turn-by turn directions on your Curve using the Verizon VZ Navigator.

When the Dare is turned on its side, a full QWERTY keypad opens automatically, thus making it even easier to text or instant message; it is also picture and video messaging capable as well. It also has a great drawing pad feature, which enables users to draw images or map directions and send them instantly. The web browser also allows users to navigate the web via the touchscreen, making for a great interactive experience.

The Dare also features a 3.2 megapixel camera/camcorder, which has Face Detection and SmartPic Technology, so you can take high-quality pictures and organize them easily. You can also take landscape pictures and video by simply turning the phone on its side. It also comes with Bluetooth® Wireless capacity, a music player, V Cast accessibility on the Verizon network and will support microSD™ memory cards up to 8GB of memory to transfer media on and off your phone with ease. You can also download music and games from the Media Center.

For the money, the LG Dare is easily on of the best touchscreen phones you will find on the market today.

Google Android

Android Market is Google’s answer to Apple’s iPhone App Store— it is where owners of phones that support the Android operating system, such as the T-Mobile G-1 with Google or the new Samsung I7500, can purchase applications for their smartphones. The main difference, besides the manufacturer, is that the Android Market makes available applications made by third party developers without having them cleared first.

When it comes to sheer volume of applications, the iPhone is currently in the lead, partly because it has been around longer than phones supporting the Android OS. Android seeks to change this, by allowing developers to upload their applications, create a description for them, and make them immediately available to the public via Android Market. For iPhone users, Apple first reviews new applications, deciding whether or not to include them in their App Store. This potentially limits the number and range of applications available for the iPhone. This makes the Android Market more developer-friendly and could, over time, allow Android users a much wider and ever-changing selection of applications to choose from for their smartphones.

Another plus for those with phones supporting Android over iPhone users is that if Apple decides to eliminate a particular application, they can immediately delete the app from your iPhone using a universal network delete key. Having applications suddenly deleted without warning from your phone is not a problem Android users have to worry about. As the Android Market continues to expand, there should be plenty of new developments to discuss in the future.

Samsung Gravity Mobile Phone Accessories

Along with the huge variety of Samsung cellular phones and mobile devices available today is an equally, if not greater, variety of accessories for those phones and devices. From headsets to covers, Bluetooth to batteries, there are so many ways to outfit your mobile phone.

We’re going to look at some great accessories for the Samsung Gravity, starting with the Naztech n301 lithium polymer battery. This battery is great for long flights or trips when you cannot afford to have your phone run out of battery life; it can get up to 3 times as much life than the standard battery for the Gravity. It can be charged by plugging it into a USB port on a computer, or using a wall or car charger.

Want to go hands-free? You can do it in stereo with the OEM Samsung Hands Free Stereo Headset. This headset actually allows you to do things like listen to music as you carry on a phone conversation. You can use the one touch button to either answer or end a call, and it can also be used to enable Voice Activated Dialing.

If you need more memory for your Gravity, you can increase its capacity by purchasing a SanDisk microSD Memory Card. These cards range in capacity from 1GB, 2GB, 4GB and 8GB of memory and all of them come with SD adapters.

Samsung Delve R800

While Alltel is not the largest cellular provider in the country, they are still keeping up with the smartphone and touchscreen trends with the rest of the major providers. The Samsung Delve from Alltel incorporates a camera phone, music player and global positioning all in one device with a smooth, user-friendly touchscreen interface.

The Delve is the first phone you can get in the US with Samsung’s TouchWhiz technology, and the menu can be adjusted to either an icon or a list design. It gets excellent call quality and allows you to have a note pad and voice memo open while you are on a call. The Delve has a bright 3-inch display so you can easily navigate the menu or shortcut bar, and utilizes handwriting recognition technology as well.

While it is great for taking calls, leaving messages and taking notes on the go, the Delve also comes equipped with a 2-megapixel camera, with loads of options, such as auto focus, self-timer and four picture quality settings. It also has a music player that will support album art, and is very easy to use. Some of its other most useful features include Bluetooth compatibility, speaker phone, voice dialing and commands, an input for USB mass storage drives and GPS that works in sync with directional applications.

Alltel might not be the largest service provider, but the Samsung Delve is an outstanding phone they are offering at a very reasonable price, proving you don’t need to be a big name to be on the cutting edge.

Nokia 5610 Xpress Music Phone

For those of you who want as much of your music with you at the ready wherever you go, one of the best, music-centered phones out right now is the Nokia 5610 Xpress Music Phone from T-Mobile. This candybar-style slider phone offers music lovers one of the best players on the market and a whole range of other features.

First off, unlike many other slider phones, this one a s good sturdy feel to it in your hand, with having too stiff of motion when you open and close it. The display is sharp and colors and text both pop off the screen equally. Below the display is the music navigation controls for the 5610 Xpress, including a slide bar that, depending which direction you move it, will automatically start either the music player or the FM radio function. For the music player, it is easy to load music on to your phone using the USB cable or on a microSD memory card (the phone itself comes with 20MB of internal storage and supports up to an 8GB microSD card).

In addition to the great music player functionality and features, the 5610 Xpress also has a 3.2 megapixel camera that will take pictures in six different resolutions, an 8x zoom and several picture modes, including a sequences mode that will rapidly take up to six pictures consecutively. With excellent call quality from T-Mobile to boot, the 5610 Xpress offers some of the best digital media functionality of any phone on the market.

First Sony Ericsson Google phone to run Android OS 2.0

We already know that Sony Ericsson has plans to release a Google Android phone in 2009, but ever since joining the Open Handset Alliance in December 2008, we haven't heard a peep from the company. That is, until now.

Speaking at a launch event in Taiwan, Peter Ang, Sony Ericsson's Asia-Pacific vice president of marketing, told reporters that its first Google smartphone will arrive in the "near future" and that it will run Android 2.0 (aka Donut). Ang added that the device will have Sony Ericsson's unique style and though he did not elaborate on what exactly that meant, he did refer to the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 and its use of the interactive panel interface.

There were earlier rumors that Sony Ericsson would release an Android phone by the summer, but considering that the Android 1.5 Cupcake update is just now being rolled out to T-Mobile G1 owners and Sony Ericsson's device will run Android 2.0, this scenario seems doubtful. Or perhaps the next-generation operating system is farther along than we thought? Wishful thinking?

HTC plans Android-based 'OPhone' for China

For a holiday, it's been an eventful day in the world of HTC-Android-phone news. First came those leaked internal AT&T documents that showed, among other things, a new HTC Android device called the Lancaster that's supposedly targeted for an August U.S. launch. Now comes word of HTC's plans, starting next month, to sell an Android-powered smartphone in China, the world's largest wireless market.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the new China-bound Android phone will be a version of HTC's Magic, the successor to the T-Mobile G1 (formerly known as the HTC Dream) that launched in February.

The phones will reportedly be customized with software from wireless carrier China Mobile and called OPhones (referring to Open Mobile System, the name for China Mobile's customized version of Google's mobile operating system). And yes, the name does bring to mind another little smartphone we've heard of, but at least, as far as we can tell, the "O" will be capitalized.

There's no final word on price yet, but the WSJ speculates that HTC's new China phone will retail for about 5,000 yuan, or about $730.

The OPhones could prove a big boon for HTC, which is aiming to double sales in China this year from 800,000 units last year, according to the newspaper. Market giant China Mobile has at least 415 million subscribers, and it may not be the only operator offering the handset. HTC Chief Executive Peter Chou said HTC may also offer Android-based models through China Telecom and China Unicom.

Android-based phones, of course, aren't new to Asia. Earlier this month, we reported on the Singapore HTC Magic launch. Following Singapore, the Magic is expected to head to Hong Kong and then to Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam by end of the second quarter.

But China looks like a particularly robust market for Android devices. Last week, Andy Rubin, Google's director of mobile platforms, specifically mentioned a high level of interest there when talking to CNET News about the promise of the operating system.

The iPhone 3G S arrives

Apple's newest iPhone went on sale Friday, and while there weren't the throngs of buyers lined up for blocks in all locations as was the case for the iPhone 3G a year ago, there was plenty of activity as the 7:00 a.m. sales start drew near in each time zone.

And the first buyers now have their hands on the iPhone 3G S.

CNET's Caroline McCarthy and Marguerite Reardon are reporting live from several retail locations in Manhattan and say that the crowds grew throughout the morning. When the store opened, Apple Store employees were letting about 10 people at a time in to buy the iPhone and complete the activation. In the San Francisco Bay Area, Erica Ogg, Josh Lowensohn, and James Martin are also keeping tabs on iPhone sales.

It was a bit of a different story across the Atlantic. iFixit's Kyle Wiens flew to London for the opening and was amazed at the number of people lined up there.

"I knew that Apple puts their retail stores in high-traffic locations, but Regent Street is ridiculous! So many people, it's almost scary," said Wiens.

Wien's iFixit has already disassembled the iPhone 3G S and has pictures posted on his Web site. Rapid Repair also has pictures posted of its teardown process after getting its new iPhone.

Meanwhile, the line at the Knoxville, Tenn., Apple Store seemed very orderly first thing this morning, according to TUAW.

Macworld reports a long line in Arlington, Va., as the crowd at the Apple Store there wound its way along the back of the mall. Overall, lines seem to be moving quite quickly throughout the U.S.

Unfortunately, the same cannot be said north of the border, in Toronto. iLounge reports that Rogers Wireless is having difficulty processing orders, so Apple can only help customers with new activations at this point.

Nobody really expected the iPhone 3G S lines to be as chaotic as those for the first iPhone or for the iPhone 3G, but the volume of business has seemed respectable in the early going. Apple and AT&T did a lot of planning, allowing customers to pre-order the iPhone online in the hopes of avoiding any launch day disasters.

Piper Jaffray's senior analyst Gene Munster expects Apple will see 500,000 iPhones this weekend alone. The iPhone 3G S goes on sale in eight countries today including Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Buy an iPhone? No thanks, I'm going Nokia

NEW YORK--Collins Osei, who had bought an iPhone 3G last year, came to the AT&T store Friday not to buy the latest-generation iPhone 3G S, but instead he wanted to downgrade to a less expensive Nokia phone.

Osei said his decision to go back to a basic-feature phone was all about cost. The iPhone and its service plan are simply too expensive, he said. Osei, who is in the middle of his two-year contract with AT&T, had his iPhone 3G stolen recently. But he said replacing it with a new one would cost too much. Instead, he picked up a Nokia 2600 for a mere $43.

But Osei's decision didn't hinge just on the upfront cost of the phone. He also said he was tired of paying the additional $30 a month data charge that is mandatory with the iPhone.

"The iPhone plan was just too expensive," he said. "They made me pay $30 extra a month for data, and I don't really need the Internet on my phone. So I went back to a regular phone. And now I'm on a plan that costs $39.99 a month."

Osei might not be the only consumer out there turned off by the high cost of the iPhone service fee. Unlike previous iPhone launch days, there was no line of people this morning waiting outside the AT&T Time Square store hoping to get the latest iPhone 3G S. In fact, it looked like more customers were leaving the store empty-handed or with other devices than those leaving with new iPhones.

The reason for this might be that the new-generation iPhone is only an incremental advance in terms of hardware over last year's model. The two main highlights of the new phone are its faster speed and larger memory. Or perhaps more consumers had their new iPhones shipped directly to their homes.

But the sparse crowds at the AT&T store might also have something to do with the slumping economy. With the national unemployment rate over 9 percent, some consumers are reconsidering buying expensive smartphones and pricey service plans. AT&T and Apple have worked hard to bring the entry cost of the iPhone down to an affordable level. The new iPhone 3G S starts at $199 with a two-year contract, and last year's 8GB iPhone 3G has been reduced to just $99. But customers are required to sign two-year contracts for these phones, which at a minimum will cost them $1,680 over the life of their service contracts.

Peter Pham, CEO of Billshrink.com, a Web site that helps consumers cut waste out of their monthly bills said that it sometimes takes consumers a little while before they realize the full impact of the service fees on their wallets.

"Most people don't realize how much they are paying for their service until they are about six to seven months into their two-year contracts," he said. "And then they start to realize that their bills are really high."

The majority of cell phone users in the U.S. don't use all the services that they pay for, Pham added. His company's Web site can analyze consumers' phone bills and help them figure the best plan for their usage patterns given where they live.

Meanwhile, smartphones, such as the iPhone, continue to sell well. Analysts are predicting a big launch weekend for the new iPhone 3G S. Apple and AT&T are expected to sell more than 500,000 units over the next few days. Apple sold out of its preorder phones well before launch day, and it looked like there were steady lines Friday morning at Apple stores throughout the country.

But as the smartphone market matures and if the economy worsens, it will be interesting to see if consumers start demanding less expensive data plans from their carriers. Or perhaps some, like Collins Osei, will simply go back to their basic cell phones.

T-Mobile announces second Google phone

Competition in the smartphone market is heating up this summer as one new hot smartphone after another hits the street. The latest is T-Mobile's next Google Android device, called the myTouch.

T-Mobile will announce the new smartphone Monday. It is the second smartphone the carrier has introduced that uses Google's open-source mobile operating system, Android. T-Mobile introduced the world's first Google Android phone, called the G1, last fall. And so far the company claims it has sold over 1 million devices.

The myTouch is manufactured by HTC and is essentially the same hardware design as the Google Ion, which is also known as the HTC Magic. The device was introduced at the GSMA Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in February and is now being sold by Vodafone in various markets around the world.

The Google Ion/HTC Magic has been described as thinner than the G1 and slightly smaller than Apple's iPhone. But it features a large 3.2-inch touch screen with a resolution of 320 x480 pixels and no physical keyboard. The phone offers network support for 3G and Wi-Fi.

Kent German, an editor for CNET Reviews, characterized the Google Ion/HTC Magic as having a "sleek, attractive design with a gorgeous display, tactile controls, and an easy-to-use interface. " German said that the phone was the Android device he had been waiting for.

CNET's German hasn't yet reviewed the new myTouch, which will come in new colors and have enhanced software capabilities specially designed for T-Mobile.

The myTouch comes with 512 Megabytes of internal memory and supports microSD for external storage. The device will ship with a 4GB microSD card, but customers can add more storage if they'd like.

Even though T-Mobile's first Android phone hasn't even been out a year, T-Mobile is calling the myTouch its premier Android smartphone, said Andrew Sherrard, vice president at T-Mobile. The carrier will announce a few more Android devices later this year, but it will be focusing much of its marketing efforts promoting the myTouch. And while Sherrard said the G1 isn't going away anytime soon, he believes the myTouch will have an even better chance to pick up new customers who are looking for an easy to use smartphone.

T-Mobile plans to sell the myTouch for $199 with a two-year service contract, and it will be available to current T-Mobile customers starting July 8. Non-T-Mobile customers will be able to get the new phone in early August.

The myTouch is entering the market just as every major smartphone maker is also introducing its latest and greatest device. Three other smartphones makers have already started selling phones this summer. Palm's much anticipated Pre was introduced on Sprint Nextel's network two weeks ago. Nokia followed with its U.S. debut of the N97, touch-screen smartphone. And Apple started selling its faster and memory-enhanced iPhone 3G S on Friday.

Like the Palm Pre and Apple iPhone 3G S, the myTouch will be sold exclusively through a single wireless operator in the U.S. And as a result the $199 price tag is subsidized and requires consumers sign a two-year service contract with the carriers. By contrast, Nokia's N97 is not subsidized and is sold at full retail price without a service contract.

So how does T-Mobile expect the myTouch to stand out among all these other cool new phones? The key, Sherrard said, is personalization. While the basic hardware design of the myTouch is the same as the HTC Magic, T-Mobile has made enhancements to the device both in terms of hardware and software.

"No two myTouch devices will be alike," Sherrard said. "They will be as unique as the users that own them."

From a software perspective, consumers will have the opportunity to completely customize their myTouch device with various Android applications. In retail stores, T-Mobile sales representatives will help customers set up their own personalized device before they leave the store.

One example of an application that will make the phone more unique to a particular individual is called Sherpa, created by Geodelic. This application is a location-based service that uses GPS to help users find restaurants, movie theaters, and other businesses or points of interest that are nearby.

What differentiates this service from other location based services is that Sherpa learns where users have been and what they have searched for in the past, and the application is able to make recommendations. It might show some local businesses that it thinks a user might be interested in, such as the nearest dry cleaner. Or the application might highlight special events going on in that area. It also will tell users how far they are from whichever location they are trying to find.

The application, which is one of 5,000 applications available on the Android Marketplace, will be exclusive to T-Mobile, Sherrard said. The myTouch will also have special Google features baked in, such as easy picture uploading to Picasa and easy video loading to YouTube, both Web properties owned by Google.

Some other ways users will be able to customize their phones includes the ability to add widgets, music, a personal calendar, photos, and Web link shortcuts that can all be accessed with a single click.

"What we have found is that once consumers know how to customize a device and they add everything they want on it, they respond very well to having a phone that is specially designed for them," Sherrard said.

Still, the battle for the smartphone customer could get bloody. Even though Apple's iPhone 3G S offered only a modest hardware upgrade, it still flew off the shelves the first weekend it was on the market. Analysts said earlier they had expected Apple to sell 500,000 iPhone 3G S devices during the weekend, and it's likely that the company easily exceeded these expectations.

The Palm Pre also got off to a good start with devices selling out the first weekend it was on sale. And Research In Motion, one of the biggest smartphone makers on the market, expects to introduce the BlackBerry Tour and the next generation of its touch-screen BlackBerry phone, the Storm, later this year.

In the end, Sherrard believes consumers will seethe myTouch as more than just a phone.

"This is more than a product launch for us," Sherrard said. "We want consumers to view this as an experience that we are creating for them."

The Apple iPhone is an Amazing Device

Most people have already heard about the amazing Apple iPhone and all the great features that it has to offer. After all, this device has allegedly been in the making for almost four years and greatly anticipated by millions. Now this amazing device has hit the market and is available for all to enjoy. In the event that you are not familiar with the Apple iPhone, here is what you are missing.

It is pretty oblivious that the Apple iPhone is not an ordinary cell phone. The many exciting features that you get with this iPhone are as unique as it was made out to be. It weighs in at a mere 4.8 ounces and measures 4.5 inches long, 2.4 inches wide and 0.46 inches thick.

The Apple iPhone has all the great features that you expect with any cell phone, including the ability to do conference calling. However, instead of accessing the features by pushing buttons you have all the advantages that a touchscreen has to offer. All functions can be controlled by the touch of a finger.

The Apple iPhone is designed with an intelligent keyboard with predicitive ability. What this means is that it will predict the words that you are typing when you are using the MMS and SMS text messaging features. This will help to reduce mistakes made when sending messages. It also comes equipped with a 2 megapixel camera with excellent photo management applications. Browsing through your photos or accessing your email is a breeze with the touchscreen technology and your photos can even be made compatible to be used with your PC or Mac computer.

Missing important emails is a thing of the past and the Safari browser capabilities gives you access to Google and Yahoo search. You will love the multi-task functions such as the one that allows you to display maps and then zoom in on any given point that you want a better view of.

For the music lover, the Apple iPhone has excellent iPod music abilities with touch screen controls and a 3.5 inch widescreen display that makes viewing your options easy. The screen is designed with optical-quality glass for a clearer view and the touchscreen makes it easy to find your favorite song or artists very fast and easy.

When you place the Apple iPhone near your face the built-in sensors will automatically shut off the display screen. There is also a sensor that will adjust images to make them fit the screen mode in use. The built-in ambient sensor will even help you meet the immediate light levels by adjusting the brightness of the screen automatically.

These sensors provide convenience and help to save on the battery power. The amazing Apple iPhone is big news and if you haven't taken a close look at this exciting invention as of yet, you should take the time to do so.

Managing Cell Phone Use by Children

Those with family cell phone plans know the concerns. Kids who text or talk so much they break the family budget. Kids who aren't aware of the dangers of spyware, predators, and spammers. Now with video phones that allow viewing of video and photos that could potentially be inappropriate and web enabled phones that provide access to any content on the web, kids can easily be exposed to content parents might otherwise restrict.

For Young Children
There are options of course. For very young children there are the designed-for-kids phones like Firefly and Tic Talk which inherently restrict who they can and cannot call and reject calls from numbers not in the phonebook programmed by parents. Certainly such phones are also not web enabled or video capable. The risk of exposure to inappropriate content is virtually eliminated.

Options as Kids Mature
Disney mobile cell phone plans also offer parents control over who their children call and how long they talk. Beyond this, the Disney phones offer a GPS locator feature providing additional peace of mind. These phones are designed to appear more like a traditional cell phone than the kid focused Firefly and are therefore preferable for many kids over age 7.

For those not wanting to subscribe to a Disney plan there are other options. One product, RADAR, made available by mymobilewatchdog.com allows parents to develop an approved contact list, monitor calls, emails, text and instant messages, and even alerts parents to suspicious activity. The software, for instance, can alert adults to spyware that might be tracking an unsuspecting user. Another option is "Mobile Guardian" offered by Boston Communications Group (bcgi.net) which allows parents to restrict when and who kids can call, times they can call, and the amount of time they can talk. If desired, parents can also block certain numbers and view a history of calls.

Software solutions that can be used on any data enabled phone will certainly make managing the cell phone habits of teens easier for parents. For some parents, the need to implement some of the same safeguards used on the home PC or laptop used by their tweens and teens will be equally important for their cell phone. RuleSpace is a company that is developing content filtering software for cell phones. Such software can read websites and filter out those deemed inappropriate. It is anticipated that such filtering software will be adopted by manufacturers/wireless providers within the next couple of years.

Options by Cellular Providers and Manufacturers
Some cellular providers are already beginning to offer add-on services to allow more parental control in restricting expenses. AT&T now offers a service called Smart Limits which can place an hour limit on talk time, allowances on text messaging and downloads, and call blocking. Calls to and from parents or 911 are not part of the restrictions of the plan. In addition to these limitations, the AT&T service can also implement website filters to restrict access to objectionable content. At this time however, this feature is not available for the iPhone browser and cannot monitor activity when a Wi-Fi connection is used

T-Mobile offers KidsConnect which gives parents the ability to cap spending primarily. It limits the monthly bill to $19.99 while allowing unlimited calling to and from parents but caps text, instant, and multimedia messages. A WAP interface is also included to prevent kids from downloading extra services but doesn't yet other filtering features.

Manufacturers are also beginning to address more security issues on their phones and providing features to assist anxious parents. For instance, Sanyo introduced the SCP-2400 in 2006 which provides a number of protective features. Parents can manage not only who a child can place and receive calls from, but also allows locking of some services to avoid data charges that aren't part of their family cell phone plan. This cell phone boasts GPS locating capabilities as well.

Certainly, some of these options provide the best controls for limiting spending by kids who haven't yet demonstrated the ability to operate within a budget. For these instances, stricter controls can be set and then relaxed as an adolescent makes more mature decisions. Other options are more crucial in assuring the safety of kids who might be vulnerable as cell phones become more connected to the internet. Although security options will continue to improve, there are some current options which are worthy of consideration.

Talk and Track: GPS Cell Phones

The recent increase in demand for improved 911 emergency calling capabilities has created a new crop of cell phones with GPS tracking technology. Consumer reports note that this leap was actually inspired by the events of 9/11. At that time, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) had released orders that required all cell phone carriers to provide the ability to trace cell phone calls to a location within 100 meters or less.

In order to conform to these requirements set by the FCC, most cell phone carriers have decided to integrate the GPS technology into their cell phone handsets. Many have opted for this move rather than overhauling the tower network.

However, the cell phone GPS tracking in most mobile phones is not like those in your handy GPS receiver which allows you to take hiking in the outdoors. Most cell phones do not even allow the user direct contact to the GPS data. There are also some units that accurate location data is only recorded if an emergency call is made or if special arrangements are made with a location-based service provider (LBS).

If you do wish to have access to GPS tracking services through your cell phone, all is not lost. There are now fully GPS-enabled phones that may be used in conjunction with location-based, third party services. Nokia, Motorola, and Beneflon are among the brands offering these phones.

Let's take a look at these cell phone GPS tracking devices one by one.

Nokia

Nokia recently announced plans to provide accessible Xpress-On GPS optional hardware for owners of Nokia model 5140 phones in North America. This Xpress-On GPS optional hardware provides location service applications over GSM wireless networks.

Motorola

You may already know that Motorola manufactures a series of cell phone GPS tracking units for Nextel. In particular, these cell phone GPS tracking units include the Motorola i205, i305, i530, i710, i730, i733, i736 and i830 iDEN(TM). According to Motorola, the programmability of these GPS-enabled cell phones allows the developers to create applications that make the GPS data much more readily available to the user, as well as the location-based service providers.

Nextel

Nextel now offers a number of cell phone GPS tracking solutions for use with the above mentioned Motorola phones. The Mobile Locater is one of the most notable cell phone GPS tracking solutions developed by Nextel, while additional solutions are supplied by Mapquest, Trimble and Nextel affiliates.

Beneflon

The Track Pro and ESC are two cell phones with GPS tracking devices developed by Beneflon. These solutions are high-end cell phones designed for use in professional security and personal safety applications. Users of these phones enjoy a fully-functioning GPS unit that provides accurate location data without network assistance. It's important to note that while these are not Internet-enabled devices, they do have a number of features that are perfectly suited for interactive communication between the user and the service center. Additionally, Beneflon itself is a multi-band GSM wireless network phone that can be used in a number of countries around the world, making it one of the best choices of cell phones with GPS tracking equipment.

Find any cell phone number easily

To find any cell phone number you can now use the tools available on the internet. Many services will enable you to successfully carry out your search to find any cell phone number. Let's sift through a few options to find that phone number.

Finding someone's cell phone number online can be a matter of pure luck. The person you are looking for has to have posted some personally identifiable information on the internet, including their cell phone number.

For reverse phone number "seekers" the good news is, and despite what some birds of ill-omen may say, that people still post their personal data online. The reason for that is quite simple: as cell phones have become ultimate items of luxury, users want to be able to trace their little "babies" in case anything happens and the phone is misplaced, lost or stolen.

Accessing public information used to be quite difficult mainly because of legal issues. Now, however, with the ever-increasing development of the internet, it is feasible to retrieve public data without spending hundreds of dollars on private detectives.

Numerous sites have specialized into public data searches. To date, the most effective ones are Phonenumber.com, Anywho, Whitepages and Switchboard.

The good thing about doing your own research from home is that you have total control over the information you are submitting, your personal data are not handled by a tier and consequently you are saving time and money.

A good way of starting you research is through the area code. The area code starts with any digit between 2 to 9, and the succeeding two digits can be made up of any numbers from 0 to 9. Area codes are allocated to specific geographic areas. In conducting your cell phone number tracking, you can use the area code to narrow down the search to a certain area and then can get near the location of the number in question.

Do not be fooled by services predicting miracles: some phone numbers will never be found. However, if you carry the research from the comfort of your home, you more likely to have a greater control over the information you give and you receive. Paying a small fee for services is ok, as long as you keep your expectations reasonable.

Choose the Best Cell Phone Service that fits Your Needs

Cell phones don't dictate our lifestyle but they sure do enhance it. A cellular phone has become an essential part of our lives in today's busy day and age. It seems like every where you look there are more choices for phones, rate plans and carriers. By keeping us in touch with our loved ones and business clients, cell phones have made our lives much more mobile.

There are a number of cellular phone service providers in the market today, having their own unique service plans and coverages. These plans are not always the same. Different carriers have their own definitions of "Night and Weekend calling hours" and charge different fees for daytime minutes. Most cellular phone plans offer free night and weekend calling bundled with blocks of minutes with a one or two year commitment for service, usually starting at around $30-$40 per month.

"Pay as you go" or pre-paid phone service is an easy way for people without credit, or not wanting to be tied to a monthly contract, to get a phone. "Pay as you go" plans do not include monthly fees, contracts or credit checks. The purchaser of a pre-paid cell phone plan is required to buy a cell phone specifically designed for a certain carrier. Typically the phone will only work with that certain carrier.

Prepaid airtime can be purchased through the carrier in the form of a phone card, which has a bundle of minutes, or airtime, that are then loaded onto the phone. The prepaid cards usually start at $20 and go up in price from there. These plans usually feature a higher per minute sirtime rate.

Prepaid plans are extremely popular as they help you keep a tab on how much money is being spent on the cell phone. Online shopping tends to offer the best deals and prices on various prepaid cell phone plans. You can also purchase prepaid phones at electronics retailers like Best Buy or Wal-Mart, cell phone retailers, and even convenience stores.

The alternative to pre-paid calling plans and phones is to sign a monthly contract usually for one or two years in length. Cell phone carriers offer deals on phones and services when you sign a one or two year service agreement. Usually you see these phones advertised as free or a very low cost.

Family plans are also a popular choice for cell phone users. Family plans allow the unused minutes of one phone to be used by another phone on the same family plan. Depending on the carrier, phones that are on family plans can talk to each other for an unlimited length of time without using any of the minutes that are in the monthly plan. This is a great option for parents wanting to get phones for the teenagers or children.

If you are planning on getting a cellular phone on a monthly service contract, choosing the best cell phone carrier or service provider should be your number one priority. Customers who want to have the best options available should also consider their service providers. When shopping, keep in mind that buying a new cell phone is more than just style and look or bells and whistles. Purchasing a cell phone should focus on the phone's capability to fit into your lifestyle and budget.

Why Do Cell Phones Drop Calls?

Have you ever been talking on a cellular phone and right at the most important part of the conversation you hear dead air. Or worst, you hear a click and some static? One of the most annoying things that can happen to you when you are working or driving down the road is to drop a phone call while on your cell phone. You can't even watch television without hearing a commercial or comedian making mention of dropped cell phone calls.

It is one of the most aggravating events of modern society. Dropped cell phone calls never seem to happen on a non important phone call. Just wait until you get into the middle of a business call or you are talking to your child's teacher at school, this is while the conversation is critical and there may not be a way to get back to the other party so easily, that is while our mobile phone decide to drop the call.

Dropped phone calls are nothing new. They have been around since the beginning of mobile telephone history. One of the complexities of the mobile telephone system is that the phone is constantly trying to find a stronger signal or higher quality reception. The cell phone is trying to find a tower that might be closer. So as our mobile phones look for higher signal, usually while we are traveling, the phone will then try to move the phone call to a tower that might be a little closer to the mobile telephone. By moving the phone call to the closer tower the network is trying to provide you with higher quality phone calls.

As you might imagine, cell phone networks have a ton of subscribers. If you have ever driven during rush hour traffic, you can see numerous phone calls happening all at the same time. This is where the problem lies. There are only so many channels for you to talk on. There is a limit to how many phone conversations can happen at the same time in a small geographical area.

As the phone and the cell phone system proceed to move your phone call, the system will look for a channel for you to talk on and there will not be one available. Your signal has weekend from the previous tower and you are fading, fading, no channels yet...Oh. You just got dropped the call. What happened? There was no more space on the tower that you were trying to switch to. Most of the time if you wait a few minutes, you can connect back to the network and complete your call. Even though your cell phone may show excellent signal strength, if there are no channels to talk on then you will drop the call.

This is not the only issue that causes dropped phone calls, sometimes you can be in a bad area to start with. Trees and heavy vegetation will sometimes affect your call quality. One more issue may be the network might be having system problems in the location that you are currently at. One more possibility could be that you have defective equipment. Meaning that your cell phone has some internal damage on the boards causing it to lose reception.

If you are experiencing a lot of dropped calls with your current cellular phone provider you may want to examine switching your reception to a cellular company who has a reputation of good service in your area. Moreover, get your phone checked out by a certified technician at an authorized service center. This could save you the aggravation of dropping phone calls if the issue can be solved by simply purchasing some new equipment or having your existing phone repaired.

Nokia 5000 with Free Line Rental

The latest phone to be offered with 12 months free line rental is the Nokia 5000.
First impressions are that the Nokia 5000 is a very ordinary looking mobile phone. However, this is what you would expect from an entry level mobile phone targeting new / developing markets. As one would expect from an entry level mobile phone, the Nokia 5000 is very cheap, costing just $125. One of the real strengths of the Nokia 5000 within this price bracket it the number of features you can get for your money. The nokia 5000 is far more advanced than other mobile phones selling in this price bracket.

The Nokia 5000 comes equipped with Bluetooth for wireless conenctivity, a 1.3 mega pixel camera for you to snap away with, an FM radio to keep you entertained, a web browser to keep you up to date with current events, a 2" 240x320 pixel display (which is exceptional within this price bracket), an email client to help you keep in touch with friends and a range of PIM functions. All this runs on the tried and tested Nokia S40 operating system.

Furthermore the Nokia 5000 includes a multimedia player capable of playing MP3 files for you to listen to. Unfortunately Nokia saw fit to equip this mobile phone with just 12MB of internal memory, worse still, this phone has no memory card expansion slot, so, you may find yourself listening to the same tracks over and over!

A major limitation of the Nokia 5000 is that it is only a dual band phone (900 - 1800 / 850 - 1900 MHz) which means it cannot be used / sold in certain territories. This is a real limitation if you travel a lot and want to use your mobile phone in any country. If you do travel a lot with your mobile phone, then the Nokia 5000 is probably not for you, and you should look for a tri band phone instead.

It is very surprising that the Nokia 5000 mobile phone is lacking an expansion slot, as this is not an expensive addition for a mobile phone, and really limits the phones uses in terms of multimedia / photography. Nokia could easily have included a memory expansion slot with this phone and still kept it within a comparable price bracket. The lack of a memory expansion slot is even more surprising when looking at the other features that are included with the Nokia 5000 mobile phone.

The battery life of the Nokia 5000 is stated as being up to 14 days standby time and 4 hours 45 minutes talk time. The Nokia 5000 handset is very neat and convenient to carry, weighing just 74 grams.

In summary, this is a great phone for the price, and benefits as ever from Nokia's practical approach to design and intuitive user interface. For the price it is hard to beat with a vastly superior display to most other phones within this price bracket.

The Nokia 5000 will be available during Q2 2008 in a variety of colour combinations, and, as a budget phone you can be sure it will be available with 12 months free line rental.

BlackBerry Curve 8900

The recently released Blackberry Curve 8900 is one of RIM's most compact and up to date phones on the market. The 8900 is slightly thinner than previous models and has less wasted space around the screen and the keys making it look and feel like a quality product.

The new dimensions of the 8900 makes the phone look much sleeker and modern compared to previous models and with it not being too small or too big it fits comfortably in the pocket. The look of the phone itself looks both smart and businesslike so will suit both teenagers and businessmen alike.

The screen on the 8900 is bright and large which makes it easy to read emails and view web pages on the phones browser. The full QWERTY keyboard offers a reliable and straightforward way of typing and helps improve the usability of the phone when writing email messages. Each key on the keypad is raised at one edge which provides enough definition to allow the user to find them with their thumb.

Just like previous Blackberry phones, the 8900 holds a tracker ball that allows you to scroll through your emails, web sites and other areas of the phone with ease and in the long run proves very handy as a navigational tool.

There are two keys located on the right and left hand sides of the phone which can be configured as shortcuts to different applications stored on the phone such as your web browser, music player or camera. The 3.2 megapixel camera is located on the back of the phone next to an LED photo light. This helps the user of the phone to take pictures with ease and the LED photo light helps to improve the quality when taking images at night.

Also included on the phone is a 3.5mm headphone jack which allows you to plug in any set of small headphones to listen to your music on the go. There are also keys on the top of the phone which allows you to lock the handset or put it into 'mute' mode with ease.

The phone's applications and games are enough to keep anybody entertained for hours on end. Boasting some great graphics for a mobile phone you won't be displeased when using them. Different apps can be downloaded from the Blackberry App Store which is located on the blackberry website. A handy feature included on the Blackberry Curve 8900 is the maps feature which doubles up as a GPS system.

Overall the BlackBerry Curve 8900 is in my opinion one of the best phones to be brought out for a long time. For other reviews on the latest cell phoneand Nokia cell phone, as well as the latest tech news subscribe to our blog.

Apple’s iPhone outsells BlackBerry

Over 39.9 million smartphones were shipped around the world in the July - September period, representing a 28 per cent increase, according to Canalys, the market data company.

Apple sold 6.9 million of the smartphones, giving it a 17 per cent share of the global smartphone market, putting it in second place behind Nokia (18.9 percent).

The growth has been explained by the impact of Apple’s iPhone 3G, launched in July as well as the company’s market expansion to more countries outside the US.

Samsung Steel headed for Vodafone

Steel yourself for this mid-ranger from Samsung called…the Steel. With its brushed metal finish and the black plastic base, the Steel certainly lives up to its name, though at the cost of being similar to the Samsung Soul. The navpad certainly is alike, but lacks the interactivity that the Soul’s pad has. The slider has a 2.2-inch display, small but enough to watch videos or pictures shot on its 3-megapixel camera. Though the details are scarce, we do know that the Steel has a microSD slot, support for tri-band GSM with EDGE and HSDPA data transfer, and while can only guess that it will have some media capabilities, Samsung has let it slip that the phone will boast a DAB radio among other things.

The Samsung Steel is expected to land in the UK exclusively through Vodafone this June. So we don’t have to wait too long to know more…

Sony Ericsson Z555i Linear Black

Sony Ericsson has recently added another color to its Z555i Cell phone. This one in Linear Black looks good. Those who have failed to pick on the previous versions; can try this one. However, this cell phone is just available in japan for now. There is no news about its availability in other countries.

iPhone Earth not by Google

Well this is something I’d be interested in doing. Having Earth at the tips of my fingers is interesting at least. Of course I would have expected this to be a Google Earth version for the iPhone. And I am both happy and sad to report it isn’t.

Why happy? I like the fact others have approached this subject. Competing against Google is tough on every level, especially against their perfected Google Earth and especially in the mobile world.

Why sad? I am still counting on Google for any search I’d make, especially on Google Earth. I would assume they will bring an iPhone solution to the table.

This Earth version is in beta right now for Windows and Linux and there’s no release date. Hopefully it’s going to hit 3G iPhone users soon. The manufacturer Earthscape should be kept under observation. Who knows what similar solution they might come up with!

Samsung debuts solar-powered cell phone

If you’re an outdoorsy type, you might never have to worry about your phone running out of juice again.

Samsung announced Wednesday its first solar-powered GSM mobile phone, the E1107, also known by the catchier name Crest Solar. The phone is a dual-band GSM (900MHz and 1800MHz) and can be charged anywhere the sun is shining.

The phone is about the same shape and size as most regular compact cell phones, but with one big difference: on the back it has a solar panel that’s capable of providing enough juice for about 5 to 10 minutes of talk time for each hour of charging.

Of course, this depends on how sunny it is. According to Samsung, the above estimate was based on 80,000 lux of sunlight (an average sunny day) with the phone turned off and sucking up rays.

Nokia 5610 XpressMusic gets FCC approval

It seems like FCC presented a nice New Year gift for music lovers. Those of you, who were not able to purchase the Nokia 5310 XpressMusic, watch for the upcoming Nokia 5610 XpressMusic. The latest mobile based on cutting-edge technology recently got FCC approval. It has a slider form factor like its predecessor. The company has increased the configuration of the integrated camera in Nokia 5610 from 2.0 MP to 3.0 megapixel and music playback from 18 hours to 22 hours. The Nokia 5610 cell phone comes with aluminium side panels and has a black high glossy panel. Users can enjoy web 2.0 services directly from the phone. Obviously, it does possess all the features of the XpressMusic 5310, but with advancement. There is no word on price. Let us see when it reached shops.

Nokia 5530 XpressMusic cell phone

If you couldn’t afford the 5800 XpressMusic, Nokia now has another affordable option in the same XpressMusic category that goes by the number 5530. Key features include a big touchscreen display that is 2.9 inches wide capable of display at 640×360 pixels, a 3.2 megapixel camera with autofocus and LED flash, a 3.5 mm headset jack, 70MB of internal memory which can be bumped up to 16GB via MicroSD (4GB card included), Bluetooth 2.0, and WiFi. Sadly though, the 5530 XpressMusic tops out with GPRS/EDGE network connectivity. We definitely like the price at just about $278, but the lack of 3G/HSDPA support will certainly be a big turn-off when the phone starts shipping in the third quarter of this year.
