orkut, Google's social network, added a lot of features in the past year to be more competitive and to become more popular outside Brazil and India. Google Trends shows that the interest for orkut is declining, but it's likely that some people no longer search for "orkut" since Google India and Google Brazil added the service to the navigational bar in December 2007. orkut has around 120 million users, up from 50 million users in April 2007, but Brazil (53.99% of orkut users) and India (16.91%) continue to be the countries where orkut is popular, followed by the US (15.13%). 

orkut was one of the few Google services that didn't have a mobile interface, but now you can access orkut mobile at m.orkut.com. The simplified interface shows the most recent scraps, updates from your friends, a link to your profile and a search box for orkut users. The mobile interface lets you write scraps, get birthday reminders and respond to friend requests. You can also use shortcuts to access the most important sections of the page.

There's also a new version of orkut for low bandwidth that displays less pictures. orkut will automatically switch to this new version depending on your connection, but you can opt to use it in the settings.

An interesting side-effect of YouTube's recent push for higher quality videos is that most videos can be downloaded as MP4 files directly from YouTube. Until now, you could only get FLV files from your browser's cache or using one of the many websites that let you download YouTube videos. In fact, to download the MP4 files, you need to use the same URL like for FLV files and append "&fmt=18":

ID is the video's identification value, SIGNATURE is a value that prevents you from downloading the file just by knowing the ID. You could create this URL by looking at the source code of a YouTube page, but it's much easier to automatically generate it.

One way is to save the following link as a bookmarklet by dragging it to your Links bar (in Firefox, Safari) or right-clicking and adding it to your favorites (in Internet Explorer, Opera):

YouTube's MP4 files have a higher resolution, stereo sound and can be played with applications like VLC, MPlayer, iTunes, QuickTime. Not all YouTube videos can be downloaded as MP4 files and the fallback format is FLV.

Note that YouTube's terms of use require you "not to access User Submissions or YouTube Content through any technology or means other than the video playback pages of the Website itself, the YouTube Embeddable Player, or other explicitly authorized means YouTube may designate," so these scripts could break YouTube's policies. The scripts only download files that are used by YouTube's player, so you may also find the videos in your browser's cache.

Update: You no longer have to right-click and select "save link as" because YouTube sends the right MIME type. Just click on the download link.

Google inserted this screenshot "from the future" in a presentation for Google Apps. We can see revealing messages like: "Show dialpad", "Call details", "Enter a name or phone number".

BSNL announced the launch of India’s first 3G enabled Blackberry services today.

BSNL gives two kinds of IP’s to their users, one that starts with 59.xx.xx.xx (Type 1) and other with 117.xx.xx.xx (Type 2)

Note: To find out your IP type, right click on the BSNL icon which will at the bottom right of your screen resembling 2 computers when the connection is ON and click on Status and go to details tab. There you can find your servers IP address and your IP address (client).

For type 1 IP’s, you can check your BW usage by visiting this website and for type 2 by visiting this website . Login to your account using your BSNL login ID and password.

Alternatively, you can use an application developed by Shaplus to check your usage, instead of visiting that portal every time.

Once you download and install the application, enter your BSNL login ID and password in the required columns, select the month for which you want to check your usage and select any administrative login url from the provided url’s. If one url doesn’t work, select a different url.

This application also tells you the remaining bandwidth for the current month and gives you a appropriate daily usage in MB so that you don’t exceed the limit.

BSNL 3G Data cards prices

BSNL Data cards are available as USB, Express cards and PCMIA. The USB can be used as plug and play in any laptop or desktop.

Users can opt for a trial pack first before opting for any particular plan.

The first trail plan will have 50MB of free usage with validity of 15 days costing only Rs.60 and the second trail plan allows 100MB of free usage with validity of 15 days costing Rs.120.

The data plans can be either prepaid or post paid.

Changing BSNL broadband plans

From long time I was looking to make a change in my broadband plan and finally today the january 1st was the day it happened.

There are two ways you can do this.Call 1500 which happens to be BSNL swagatham service and tell them about your plan change.They will record it and forward it to your local customer care center.Then you may be called by the customer care executive to have your signature ( I said may be because in some instances the change happened online).

The other way is to approach the nearest customer care center and fill the change request form.It should be signed by the person to whom the landline belongs.In cases when forms are not available ( remember BSNL belongs to Govt) you can also write a letter to the BSNL manager of your city in a paper and hand it over to the CC executive.

The point to remember here is that,you make these changes atleast 10 days prior to the next month.Which means if you want your new plan to be effective from february,then call 1500 or approach cc center by 21 or 22 january.And make calls to 1500 service in these 10 days gap too and keep them reminding about this.Hopefully your new plan becomes effective from next month.

Oh and by the way I changed my plan to 500C from H250.

Sony Ericsson’s budget walkman phone with expandable memory. Further, no other mobile phone maker currently has a comparable model in its class. Walkman is easy to use and the sound quality is also excellent. Rumors suggest that the unlocked phones will still have to be subscribed to AT&T’s mobile data plan to take advantage of all the iPhone’s extensive mobile Internet capabilities.

However, a new report by ABI research suggests that most iPhone users opt to surf the Web via wireless network, rather than connecting through AT&T’s mobile network. The reasons for this are many, but primarily because there are an abundance of WiFi networks available in most metropolitan areas these days, and download speeds tend to be quicker than even the best 3G mobile broadband networks.

It could also be that AT&T is offering the unlocked iPhone’s because it does not feel any of the competing networks is a serious threat. For example, it has been pointed out that T-Mobile’s network and mobile Internet speeds are nowhere near as good as AT&T. Unfortunately, AT&T doesn’t have any great competition out there right now — which is a real shame. A large, expensive network competitor would force AT&T to bring down their prices and improve the quality of their service.

For now though, even if you purchase an unlocked iPhone, you’re still probably going to be better off using it on AT&T’s network if you want the most extensive coverage and fastest download speeds — unless you are content only getting online where there is WiFi access.

Iphone Rumors Suggest Major Update Imminent

Once again the Internet rumor mill is all abuzz with speculation about a major update to the Apple iPhone. Apple threw gasoline on the fire by offering a sneak peek at its new iPhone 3.0 software last week, showing off a great deal of new functionality for the ubiquitous smart phone.

And although Apple is keeping mum about the exact nature of the next upgrade to the iPhone, that hasn’t stopped bloggers and Apple fanatics from speculating wildly about what will and won’t be included in the iPhone 3.0. But after Apple’s preview of the new operating system, it seems likely that a major update is imminent, probably appearing by the end of the summer.

One off repeated rumor claims to come from an executive at AT&T, and speculates that the iPhone 3.0 will be faster, though it is not clear if this refers to mobile Internet speeds. Actually, AT&T has stipulated that their new 4G (or “fourth generation”) mobile network will not be fully in place until 2011. It seems unlikely then that the new iPhone 3.0 would be “faster” in connecting to the net. 

Perhaps the AT&T executive in question was suggesting the new iPhone operating system would make it quicker and easier to navigate, or with quicker connection times for standard phone calls. For the time being, we can’t say for certain.

It has been reported that the new operating system will use a 7.2 Mb chip, which should make the phone easier and more robust to navigate, as well as improving its touted media player performance. The new software may also add mobile automation tools, allowing iPhone users to remotely control digital television and DVR at their home.

This nifty little feature would allow you to remotely set your home DVR to record television or movies, from the office, a restaurant, or even the other side of the country — not bad! There has been a great deal of speculation that AT&T is encouraging Apple to integrate the iPhone with home electronics, so this particular rumor does have a ring of truth to it.

Other iPhone rumors floating around the Internet suggest that the new operating system will allow digital video recording directly on the phone itself. This sounds reasonable in some ways, especially considering that several other prominent phones now offer video capture as a standard feature. The iPhone certainly should offer this as well, if for no other reason than to keep up with the competition.

T-Mobile to Use Google Android for “Home Devices”

T-Mobile has begun aggressively moving into the “home device” market with a new series that takes advantage of Google’s Android operating system, which is already used in many popular cell phones, including those by T-Mobile.

As part of the new push, T-Mobile will begin selling a home phone in 2010, along with a tablet computer designed for the home. Both devices will run android, according to T-Mobile’s partner companies for the project. At present, T-Mobile is not discussing the specifics of the “home devices” but has confirmed that the company plans to introduce several new communications devices based around Google’s android operating system.

As a wireless phone service provider, T-Mobile is lagging somewhat behind the competition. Last year the company ranked fourth nationwide, behind AT&T, Sprint and Verizon. However, T-Mobile had the distinction of being the first network/service provider to offer a mobile phone running Google’s android software (the T-Mobile G1, made by Taiwan’s HTC).

Even though the android operating system is open source and can be modified to some extent by partner companies, Google still maintains a degree of control over Android. And though it is specifically designed for use in mobile phones, Google has always insisted that Android is suitable to a wide range of devices, including palmtop computers, netbooks, and household communications devices.

So far, most of the other big wireless companies have avoided Android like the plague. T-Mobile is currently the only company using the operating system in a commercially available cell phone. However, there are rumors that Sprint will also begin shipping an Android enabled mobile phone later this year.

With the addition of the new home devices, T-Mobile (along with Android) is once again blurring the distinction between what is a phone, and what is a computer or palm top. Analysts predict that other wireless companies will also branch out into the home device market, including the sale of home phones and other in-home communications devices over the next 18 months.

Eventually, the big four wireless networks foresee homes full of interconnected digital devices, ranging from digital picture frames, cameras, home phones, mobile phones, security systems, televisions and digital video recorders that can all communicate with each other and be controlled from a wireless central hub.
